Montgomery City is the county seat.
The county was named after Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general who died in 1775 while trying to take over the Canadian city of Quebec.
A part of the Missouri Rhineland is in the county.
It is about in the middle of Columbia and St. Louis.
The county has a total area of 542 square miles (1,400 km2), of which 536 square miles (1,390 km2) are land and 5.8 square miles (15 km2) (1.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
