Mount Sterling is the county seat. When it comes to selling alcohol, it is called a “moist county.”
A “dry county” doesn’t allow alcohol sales, but it does have a “wet” city, like Mount Sterling, where package alcohol sales are allowed.
Montgomery County is part of the Lexington-Fayette-Richmond-Frankfort, KY Combined Statistical Area.
It is also part of the Mount Sterling, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 199 square miles (520 km2), of which 197 square miles (510 km2) are land and 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) (0.7%) are water.
