Montgomery County is a county in the U.S. state of Iowa’s southwestern region.
The population was 10,330 at the time of the 2020 census.
Its population has been declining from a peak in 1900, owing to urbanization and the demise of family farms. Red Oak is the county seat.
In 1851, European-American settlers from the east established the county.
It was named after Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general who was assassinated in 1775 while attempting to seize Quebec City, Canada.
The county has a total area of 425 square miles (1,100 km2), of which 424 square miles (1,100 km2) is land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
