A portion of the county east of the Tombigbee River was originally part of the Alabama Territory, belonging to Marion County, until new demarcation lines placed it in the State of Mississippi in 1821.
The county has a total area of 772 square miles (2,000 km2), of which 765 square miles (1,980 km2) is land and 7.0 square miles (18 km2) (0.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
