Monroe County is a county that is in the south central part of the U.S. state of Iowa.
At the beginning of the 20th century, it was a center for digging bituminous coal, and in 1910, it was home to more than 25,000 people.
As mine jobs went away, people moved to other places to work.
At the 2020 census, there were 7,577 people living there.
The county’s main city is Albia.
The county was first called Kishkekosh County after a famous Meskwaki chief, but it was changed to James Monroe County after the fifth president of the United States.
The county covers a total area of 434 square miles (1,120 km2), of which 434 square miles (1,120 km2) are land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2) (0.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
