The county seat, Milwaukee, is also the most populous city in the state.
As a part of Michigan Territory, the county was made in 1834 and formed the next year.

The county covers 1,189 square miles (3,080 km2), with 241 square miles (620 km2) of land and 948 square miles (2,460 km2) (80%) water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. When it comes to land size, it is the third-smallest county in Wisconsin.
The Milwaukee, Menomonee, Kinnickinnic, and Root Rivers all flow through it. The surface is bumpy, and the dirt is rich in calcium carbonate.
