The county was established in 1851 and named for Major Frederick Mills of Burlington, Iowa, who was slain during the Mexican-American War at the Battle of Churubusco.
Mills County is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE-IA Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 441 square miles (1,140 km2), of which 437 square miles (1,130 km2) is land and 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2) (0.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
