Cameron is the county seat.

The county was made in 1834 as a city in Mexico. In 1837, it was set up as a county.

Benjamin Rush Milam, an early settler and fighter in the Texas Revolution, is honoured by the name of Milam County.

The county has a total area of 1,022 square miles (2,650 km2), of which 1,017 square miles (2,630 km2) are land and 4.8 square miles (12 km2) (0.5%) are water.
