Edmonton is the county seat and the only city in the county.
The county was created in May 1860 and named after Thomas Metcalfe, who was Governor of Kentucky from 1828 to 1832.
Metcalfe County is part of both the Bowling Green-Glasgow, KY Combined Statistical Area and the Glasgow, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 291 square miles (750 km2), of which 290 square miles (750 km2) are land and 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) (0.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
