Mercer County is a county in the United States’ Commonwealth of Kentucky.

The population was 23,772 at the time of the 2020 census.Harrodsburg is the county seat.

The county was founded in 1785 from Lincoln County, Virginia, and was named for Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer, who was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777.

It used to be a prohibition or dry county.

Harrodsburg was the first incorporated city in Kentucky County, the Virginia region that became the 15th state.

When Lincoln County was formed in 1780, it was the county seat of Lincoln County, but when Mercer County was formed, it became the seat of Mercer County.

The county has a total area of 253 square miles (660 km2), of which 249 square miles (640 km2) is land and 4.5 square miles (12 km2) (1.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

Mercer County lies in the Bluegrass region of central Kentucky.
