The county of Mercer is in the state of Illinois.
The 2010 census said that there were 16,434 people living there.
Aledo is the county seat.
The Davenport-Moline-Rock Island, IA-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area has Mercer County as a part of it.
Hugh Mercer (1726–1777) was a doctor and general during the American Revolution. He died from wounds he got at the Battle of Princeton. The county is named after him.
In May 1812, Congress passed a law that gave volunteer fighters in the War of 1812 land in Arkansas, Michigan, and Illinois as payment. Mercer County was a part of this “Military Tract.”
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 569 square miles (1,470 km2) in size, with 561 square miles (1,450 km2) of land and 7.5 square miles (19 km2) of water (1.3%).
