This made it the fifth-least populated county in Kentucky.
Frenchburg is the county seat.The county is named after U.S. Congressman Richard Hickman Menefee, though the spelling has changed over time.
It is a dry or prohibition county. Menifee County is part of the Lexington-Fayette-Richmond-Frankfort, KY Combined Statistical Area, which also includes the Mount Sterling, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area.
It is at the bottom of the Cumberland Plateau’s hills.
On May 29, 1869, parts of Bath, Montgomery, Morgan, Powell, and Wolfe counties came together to make Menifee County.
Menifee County was one of eight places in the state of Kentucky where most people chose Barack Obama for president in 2008.
The county has a total area of 206 square miles (530 km2), of which 204 square miles (530 km2) are land and 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2) (1.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
