Hondo is the county seat.

The Medina River inspired the county’s name.

The county’s extreme northern boundary is the Edwards Plateau, which rises into the Texas Hill Country.

The Medina Dam, which was finished in 1913 and was the fourth largest in the country at the time, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The irrigation project, which created Medina Lake, was completed in two years by 1500 trained labourers working in shifts 24 hours a day.

Medina County is included in the San Antonio, TX Combined Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 1,335 square miles (3,460 km2), of which 1,325 square miles (3,430 km2) is land and 9.2 square miles (24 km2) (0.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
