McDonough County is named after Thomas Macdonough, who beat a British squadron in the final naval Battle of Lake Champlain during the War of 1812.

Congress set aside the “Military Tract” for soldiers of the War of 1812, which included McDonough County.

The county has a total area of 590 square miles (1,500 km2), of which 589 square miles (1,530 km2) are land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2) (0.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
