Pineville is the county seat.
The county was made in 1849 and named after a soldier in the American Revolutionary War named Sergeant Alexander McDonald.
The Old McDonald County Courthouse and the Powell Bridge are two of the three places in the county that are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The county has a total area of 540 square miles (1,400 km2), of which 539 square miles (1,400 km2) are land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) (0.04%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
