McCurtain County is located in Oklahoma’s southeastern corner. Its population was 30,814 as of the 2020 census.
Idabel is the county seat.
At statehood, it was formed from a portion of the earlier Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory.
The name honors a prominent Choctaw family from the area.
When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Green McCurtain was the last chief.
The county has an area of 1,902 square miles (4,930 km2), of which 52 square miles (130 km2) (2.8%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
