McCracken County is a county in the far west of the state of Kentucky in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 67,875 people living there.
Paducah is the county seat and the only city in the county.McCracken County was created in 1825, making it the 78th county in the state.
It was bought as part of the famous Jackson Purchase, when the Chickasaw people sold land to General Andrew Jackson and Governor Isaac Shelby. This land was at the very western end of Kentucky.
Paducah grew because of the “River and Rail” traffic that went through it. Up until the end of the 20th century, the economy was based on steamboats, barges, and the Illinois Central Railroad.
In the 1920s, the Illinois Central built the world’s biggest base for running and maintaining trains here.
McCracken County is part of the Paducah, KY-IL Micropolitan Statistical Area in the 21st century.
McCracken County was made out of Hickman County in 1825.
It was named for Captain Virgil McCracken of Woodford County, Kentucky, who died in the War of 1812 at the Battle of Frenchtown in southeastern Michigan.[4][5]
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers 268 square miles (690 km2), of which 249 square miles (640 km2) are land and 19 square miles (49 km2) are water, or 7.2%.
The Ohio River is the county’s northern border with Illinois, and the Tennessee River is its northeastern border.
