As of the 2020 Census, there were 29,052 people living there.

Ludington is the county seat.

The Ludington, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area is made up of Mason County.

The county is named for Governor of Michigan from 1835 to 1840, Stevens T. Mason.

It was first called Notipekago County when it was made by the Michigan Legislature in 1840.

In 1843, the name was changed to Mason County.

Before the county government was set up in 1855, the county was run by Ottawa County.

The county of Mason does not have a flag.

The US Census Bureau says that the county is 1,242 square miles (3,220 km2) in size, with 747 square miles (1,930 km2) of water and 495 square miles (1,280 km2) of land.
