Williamston is the county seat.
In 1774, the southeastern part of Halifax County and the western part of Tyrrell County were combined to make the county.
It was named after the last royal governor of North Carolina (1771–75), Josiah Martin.
The county has a total area of 462 square miles (1,200 km2), of which 461 square miles (1,190 km2) are land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2) (0.06%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
