Marion County is one of the 36 counties that make up the state of Oregon in the United States.
The population was 345,920 according to the 2020 census, making it Oregon’s fifth-most populous county.
Salem, the county seat, is also the state capital of Oregon.
The Champooick District was named after Champoeg (earlier Champooick), a meeting place on the Willamette River.
The territorial legislature renamed it in honor of Francis Marion, a Continental Army general from South Carolina who served in the American Revolutionary War, on September 3, 1849.
Marion County is included in the Portland-Vancouver-Salem, OR-WA Combined Statistical Area, as is the Salem, OR Metropolitan Statistical Area. It can be found in the Willamette Valley.
The county has a total area of 1,193 square miles (3,090 km2), of which 1,182 square miles (3,060 km2) is land and 10 square miles (26 km2) (0.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
