The county was made in 1820, and in 1824 it was put together.
It is named after General Francis “The Swamp Fox” Marion, a South Carolina officer in the Revolutionary War.
Marion County is part of the Marion, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Columbus-Marion-Zanesville, OH Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 404 square miles (1,050 km2), of which 404 square miles (1,050 km2) are land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) (0.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
It has the fifth-smallest area of any county in Ohio.
