Malheur County, pronounced [maelhr], is one of Oregon’s 36 counties.
As of the census in 2020, there were 31,571 people living there.
Its county seat is in Vale, and Ontario is its biggest city.
The Malheur River, which runs through the county, gave the county its name. The French word “malheur” means bad luck or tragedy.
Malheur County is part of the Boise Combined Statistical Area and the Ontario, Oregon Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is part of the eight counties that make up Eastern Oregon.
The county has a total area of 9,930 square miles (25,700 km2), of which 9,888 square miles (25,610 km2) are land and 42 square miles (110 km2), or 0.4%, are water, according to the US Census Bureau.
It has the second most land area in Oregon and is the only county in Oregon that is in the Mountain Time Zone.
