One of the most important cattle-raising areas in northwestern Minnesota is Mahnomen, East Polk, and Becker counties.

On December 27, 1906, the county was formed from the eastern half of Norman County, with Mahnomen, a former railway station town, serving as the county seat.

The county was named after the town, which was named after one spelling of the Ojibwe word for “wild rice.”

The county is 583 square miles (1,510 km2) in size, with 558 square miles (1,450 km2) of land and 25 square miles (65 km2) (4.3%) of water.

Mahnomen is one of 17 counties in Minnesota’s savanna region that have more savanna soils than prairie or forest soils.
