The population was 21,193 at the time of the 2020 census.
Marshall is the county seat.
Madison County is included in the Asheville, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The county was formed in 1851 by combining parts of Buncombe and Yancey counties. It was named after James Madison, the United States’ fourth President (1809-1817).
Long Ridge, just outside of Mars Hill, is a historically African-American community with one of the last remaining Rosenwald Schools in Western North Carolina.
The county has a total area of 451 square miles (1,170 km2), of which 450 square miles (1,200 km2) is land and 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2) (0.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
