The county is named for Virginia statesman James Madison, who went on to become the United States’ fourth President.
The county is included in the Lexington-Fayette-Richmond-Frankfort, KY Combined Statistical Area as part of the Richmond-Berea, KY Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 443 square miles (1,150 km2), of which 437 square miles (1,130 km2) is land and 6.0 square miles (16 km2) (1.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
