Danielsville is the county seat.

On December 5, 1811, the county was established. Comer, the county’s largest city, has a population of 1,200 people.

Madison County is part of the Atlanta-Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs, GA Combined Statistical Area, which is part of the Atlanta-Athens-Clarke County-Sandy Springs, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 286 square miles (740 km2), of which 282 square miles (730 km2) is land and 3.3 square miles (8.5 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
