It is in the northern part of the state.

Macon is the county seat.
The county was made on January 6, 1837. It was named for Nathaniel Macon, a North Carolina politician and hero from the Revolutionary War.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 812 square miles (2,100 km2), of which 801 square miles (2,070 km2) are land and 11 square miles (28 km2) (1.4%) are water.
