Decatur serves as the county seat.
Macon County is part of the Decatur, IL Combined Statistical Area.
On January 19, 1829, Macon County was founded from Shelby County.
It was named after Nathaniel Macon, a Revolutionary War Colonel.
Later, until his retirement in 1828, Macon served as a senator representing North Carolina. Future US President Abraham Lincoln and his family relocated to Macon County in 1830.
The county has a total area of 586 square miles (1,520 km2), of which 581 square miles (1,500 km2) is land and 5.2 square miles (13 km2) (0.9%) is water, according to the US Census Bureau.
