Mackinac County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan.

It is in the Upper Peninsula.

As of the 2020 Census, there were 10,834 people in the area.

St. Ignace is the county seat.

Michilimackinac County was one of the first counties in the Michigan Territory in 1818.

Before that, it was known as Michilimackinac County and was a center for French and British colonial fur trading.

There was also a Catholic church, a Protestant mission, and a settlement there.

The name of the county comes from “Michilimackinac,” which was the name of the area around the Straits of Mackinac and the French settlement at the tip of the lower peninsula.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 2,101 square miles (5,440 km2), of which 1,022 square miles (2,650 km2) are land and 1,079 square miles (2,790 km2) are water, or 51%.

Mackinac County is between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
