Lyon County was named after Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon, who fought in both the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.

The county has a total area of 588 square miles (1,520 km2), of which 588 square miles (1,520 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.26 km2) (0.02%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

Gitchie Manitou State Preserve is located in Lyon County and features some of the country’s oldest exposed bedrock.

Lake Pahoja is located in the county’s northwest corner. It is a man-made lake with a surface area of slightly more than 28 ha (70 acres).
