It is on the Edwards Plateau.
As of the census in 2020, there were 21,243 people living there.
Its county seat is Llano, and the Llano River gives the county its name.
In 1869, John Wesley Snyder, an early rancher, led a herd of cattle from Llano County, Texas, to Abilene, Kansas, along the Chisholm Trail.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 966 square miles (2,500 km2), of which 934 square miles (2,420 km2) are land and 32 square miles (83 km2) (3.3% of the total area) are water.
