The county was named after Major General Benjamin Lincoln of the American Revolutionary War and was established on December 14, 1818.
Lincoln County is included in the St. Louis, MO-IL Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 640 square miles (1,700 km2), of which 627 square miles (1,620 km2) is land and 14 square miles (36 km2) (2.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The Mississippi River forms the county’s eastern border with Illinois.
