Brookhaven serves as the county seat.
During the Reconstruction period, the legislature established the county on April 7, 1870.
It was created by combining parts of Lawrence, Pike, Franklin, Copiah, and Amite counties.
It was named after Abraham Lincoln, America’s 16th President.
Lincoln County is part of the Jackson-Vicksburg-Brookhaven Combined Statistical Area, which includes the Brookhaven, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The county is located southwest of Jackson, the state capital.
The county has a total area of 588 square miles (1,520 km2), of which 586 square miles (1,520 km2) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
