The county is named after Morgan Lewis, who was the Governor of New York when the county was made.

The county has a total area of 1,290 square miles (3,300 km2), of which 1,275 square miles (3,300 km2) are land and 15 square miles (39 km2) (1.2%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
