Monticello is the county seat.

The county was made on January 2, 1833.

It was named for Meriwether Lewis, who was an explorer and the Governor of the Louisiana Territory.

Lewis County is part of the Micropolitan Statistical Area of Quincy, IL–MO.

The county has a total area of 511 square miles (1,320 km2), of which 505 square miles (1,310 km2) are land and 5.8 square miles (15 km2) (1.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
