As of the census in 2020, there were 28,339 people living there.Greenwood is the county seat.
The county is named after Choctaw leader Greenwood LeFlore, who signed a treaty giving his people’s land to the US in exchange for land in Indian Territory.
LeFlore stayed in Mississippi and moved to a plot of land that had been set aside for him in Tallahatchie County.
The Greenwood, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area includes Leflore County.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 606 square miles (1,570 km2) in size, with 593 square miles (1,540 km2) of land and 14 square miles (36 km2) of water, or 2.3%.
