Carthage is the county seat.

Walter Leake was the Governor of Mississippi from 1822 to 1825. The county is named after him.

In 2010, Mississippi’s population centre was in Leake County, close to the town of Lena.

The county has a total area of 585 square miles (1,520 km2), of which 583 square miles (1,510 km2) are land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) (0.4%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
