New Castle is the county seat and the biggest city.
On March 20, 1849, the county was made from parts of Beaver County and Mercer County.
It was named after the USS Lawrence, which was the main ship of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.
The Pittsburgh, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Lawrence County.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 363 square miles (940 km2), of which 358 square miles (930 km2) are land and 4.5 square miles (12 km2) (1.3% of the area) are water.
The Beaver River is made up of the Shenango River, the Neshannock Creek, and the Mahoning River. Also, the Beaver River is where the Slippery Rock Creek and the Connoquenessing Creek meet.
