Lawrence County is the easternmost county in the United States of America’s state of Illinois.
The population was 15,280 according to the 2020 census.
Lawrenceville is the county seat.
Crawford and Edwards counties merged to establish Lawrence County in 1821.
It was named after Captain James Lawrence, who was killed in action while commanding the frigate USS Chesapeake during the War of 1812.
He was mortally wounded when he uttered his famous last order, “Don’t give up the ship.”
The county has a total area of 374 square miles (970 km2), of which 372 square miles (960 km2) is land and 2.0 square miles (5.2 km2) (0.5%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
