LaRue County is located in the central portion of Kentucky, outside of the Bluegrass portion and bigger population centers.

The population was 14,867 at the time of the 2020 census.

Hodgenville, the county seat, is well known as the birthplace of United States President Abraham Lincoln.

On March 4, 1843, the county was formed from the southeast corner of Hardin County.

It was named after an early pioneer, John P. LaRue.

LaRue County is part of the Elizabethtown-Fort Knox, KY Combined Statistical Area, which is part of the Louisville/Jefferson County-Elizabethtown-Bardstown, KY-IN Combined Statistical Area.

It’s a parched county.

The county has a total area of 264 square miles (680 km2), of which 262 square miles (680 km2) is land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
