The city of La Porte is the county seat, and Michigan City is the biggest city. This county is a part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
It is in Northwest Indiana and Michiana. The county center of LaPorte is where the LaPorte County Courthouse is. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
According to the 2010 census, the county has a total area of 613.26 square miles (1,588.3 km2), of which 598.30 square miles (1,549.6 km2) (or 97.56%) are land and 14.96 square miles (38.7 km2) (or 2.44%) are water.
