Paris is the county seat.

The Congress of the Republic of Texas founded the county on December 17, 1840, and it was organised the following year.

It is named after Mirabeau B. Lamar, the Republic of Texas’ second president.

The Paris, TX micropolitan statistical area is comprised of Lamar County.

The county has a total area of 933 square miles (2,420 km2), of which 907 square miles (2,350 km2) are land and 26 square miles (67 km2) (2.8%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
