Purvis is the county seat.
The county was formed in 1904 from Marion County to the west and named after Confederate Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar.
Lamar County is included in the Hattiesburg, MS Combined Statistical Area. Except for the northeast quarter, it is primarily a rural county.
The county has a total area of 500 square miles (1,300 km2), of which 497 square miles (1,290 km2) is land and 3.4 square miles (8.8 km2) (0.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
