The population was 11,059 at the time of the 2020 census.
Madison is the county seat.
The county was established in 1873.
Lake County’s terrain is made up of rolling hills, with much of the land dedicated to agriculture.
A tributary of the East Fork Vermillion River flows south-southeastward through the county’s lower western part, and Buffalo Creek flows southeastward from the county’s central part, leaving the county near its southeast corner.
The terrain generally slopes south, with high points (around 1,814′ ASL) on the north and south boundary lines and points in between.
Lake County is 575 square miles (1,490 km2) in size, with 563 square miles (1,460 km2) of land and 12 square miles (31 km2) (2.1%) of water.
