Lake County is a county in the north central region of the United States’ state of California.
The population was 68,163 at the time of the 2020 census.
Lakeport is the county seat.
Clear Lake, the county’s dominant geographical feature and the largest non-extinct natural lake entirely within California, inspired the county’s name. (Lake Tahoe is partly in Nevada; the Salton Sea was formed by flooding; and Tulare Lake was drained by agriculture.)
Lake County is part of the micropolitan statistical area of Clearlake, California.
It is located to the north of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Lake County is part of California’s Wine Country, which also includes the counties of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino. It has five American Viticultural Areas and more than 35 wineries.
