It is also sometimes spelled La Fayette County. When it was first built, it was part of the Wisconsin Territory.
There were 16,611 people living there as of the 2020 census.
City of Darlington is the county seat.
Two, the county was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who helped the American Revolutionary War Continental Army.
The Lafayette County building in Darlington was used to film scenes in the building for the 2009 movie Public Enemies.
