In the western part of Missouri, there is a county called Lafayette County.
It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area.
As of the 2020 census, there were 32,984 people living there.
Lexington is the county seat.
The county was made out of Cooper County on November 16, 1820.
It was first called Lillard County after James Lillard of Tennessee, who took part in the first state constitutional convention and first state legislature.
It was renamed Lafayette County on February 16, 1825, to honour the Marquis de La Fayette, a Revolutionary War hero who was visiting the United States at the time.
The county has a total area of 639 square miles (1,660 km2), of which 628 square miles (1,630 km2) are land and 11 square miles (28 km2) (1.6%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
