Kings County is one of New York’s 62 counties.
It was established in 1683, making it one of the state’s original 12 counties.
In 1898, the county was incorporated as one of New York’s five boroughs.
The population was 2,504,700 as of the 2010 census, up from 2,465,326 in 2000 but down from a peak of 2,738,175 in 1950.
The county covers an area of 96.90 square miles (251 km2), of which 70.61 square miles (182.9 km2) is dry land. Kings County is only bordered on the east by Queens County, but it has bridge access to Richmond County on the west and New York on the north.
