Keweenaw County is a county in the western part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
As of the 2020 census, there were 2,046 people living in the county. This made it the least populated county in Michigan.
It is also the northernmost county in the state and has the most land area, if you count the water of Lake Superior. Eagle River is the county seat.
Keweenaw County is a part of the Houghton, Michigan micropolitan area.
It is at the northeastern end of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Isle Royale National Park and Keweenaw National Historical Park are both part of the National Park Service and are in Keweenaw County.
Isle Royale and the northeastern half of the Keweenaw Peninsula make up most of the land area of the county.
Between these two parts of the county are the waters of Lake Superior, which go all the way to the state’s water borders with Ontario and Minnesota.
It has a total area of 5,966 square miles (15,450 km2), making it the largest county in Michigan.
Only 540 square miles (1,400 km2) are land, while 5,426 square miles (14,050 km2) (91%) are water.
