Kalawao County (Hawaiian: Kalana o Kalawao) is a county in the U.S. state of Hawaii.
It has the smallest land area of any of the 50 states, and after Loving County, Texas, it has the second-smallest population.
The Kalaupapa or Makanalua Peninsula is part of the county.
It is on the north coast of the island of Moloka’i. The small peninsula is cut off from the rest of Molokai by cliffs that are more than a quarter mile high. The only way to get there by land is on a trail for mules.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 53 square miles (140 km2) in size, with 12 square miles (31 km2) of land and 41 square miles (110 km2) of water (77.3%).
